I need a doctor, not a savior

The Bible says ‘All men have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God’, but science is now claiming that human beings are not really to blame for their sins. It is now claimed that it is ‘brain chemistry’, that makes us do what we do. So, we are hard-wired in a certain manner, and that is why we behave the way we do.

So the message is, do not blame me, blame my genes, by blood, my brain, my molecules my circumstances, EVERYTHING EXCEPT ME. I am innocent.

This ‘science??’ is used to justify everything from homosexual behaviour to drug abuse to alcoholism.

The implication is simple – A sinner does not need a Saviour, he needs a doctor.

My problems with this are the following.

  1. This theory implies that human beings do not have a ‘free will’ after all. We are all slaves of our own physiology. So ‘moral accountability’, which is the foundation of organised human societies, no longer makes sense.
  2. Extending this logic, we should not be putting murderers and rapists in prison. Poor chaps, it is their ‘brain chemistry’ after all. We should be sending them to the hospital for treatment.

A penny for your thoughts…….

Clearly a case of mind over matter is required :). Or in bible terms, as Paul says to the Corintians, “No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that (after I have preached to others) I myself will not be disqualified for the prize”, which implies some sort of disqualification for the ruling of the body (hardwired brain) over the person.
